How can I file for a North Carolina state extension?
North Carolina will grant you an automatic six-month extension to file your state tax return if you received an automatic extension to file your federal tax return. Visit the IRS website for more details about filing a federal extension.
If you did not receive an automatic state extension to file your N.C. individual income tax return, you may still request an extension of time to file your return by filing Form D-410 by April 15, 2025. You can create your Form D-410, print and mail it to the North Carolina Department of Revenue. You can also file Form D-410 electronically.
If you are out of the country on April 15, 2025, you are granted an automatic four-month extension to file your North Carolina tax return. “Out of the Country” means you live outside the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of work is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or you are in military service outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
Please be aware that the extension means you can avoid a penalty for filing your return late. You will still owe interest on any tax not paid by the original due date of April 15, 2025.
